I’d Sell My Mum for a Job at Maccy Ds
The issue of youth unemployment and university admissions (or unadmissions to be more precise) is everywhere. It is the true backlash of the credit crunch and it is engulfing the young and prosperous entrepreneurs of the 21st century.
I'm sure you've heard figures being thrown about willynilly, but to most of us the reality of youth unemployment isn't a statistic in a newspaper (11.8% at time of right by the way) it's being rejected for a job from Mac Donalds as applications have reached 1,300 per day.
But wait, before you give up (on this article not our abysmal situation) you must stop, deep breath...Think outside the box. Wipe those salty tears from your cheek and move on, University of Leeds hasn't accepted you.
Relax your furrowed brow and cheer the hell up, JobSite isn't gonna spit that dream job at you.
The answer? Create the job yourself. PPPPFFTTTT! I hear you cry. Impossible no way. But why? If you truly believe in the skills your dusty CV talks of then it is up to you to use them.
It's going to mean giving up on some of life's little luxuries like moving out of your parents house or expecting payment for labour (stick with me guys) but it is possible.
Most of our dream jobs are out there for the taking we've just got to give a little bit first. Companies are looking for experience above anything else these days and the only way your going to get that is working for free at companies that need your skills. By working in internships or doing jobs for free you’re able to learn great skills (the ones they don’t teach at school), earn respect and work your way in to the good books of the people signing the cheques. And you know what, above all else, it's fun.
Most jobs that require free labour are the ones you would usually only dream of having: DJing, journalism, web designing, photography, orgainising club nights. You can make a lot of money out of these but only if you build a name for yourself first by working for free and using the best of your abilitues.
There is only one thing you need to remember me amigos...HAVE NO FEAR!
Going headfirst into stuff like this is frightening and it will beat you down but to get the best out of it you have to be relentless.
But quite obviously, the rewards are worth it.
